MIXED VOCATIONAL IN-SCHOOL MENTORING

This exciting 10-week/one term vocational mentoring program is delivered by our school partners and contributes towards a Year 11/12 students’ VCE Vocational Major.

VME Mentoring Matters (MM)

This school-based vocational mentoring program is for students undertaking the senior applied learning program, the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM).

The MM program typically runs for a term and involves 10 weekly mentoring sessions. Mentors draw from their life and work experience to help guide in-class discussions and activities that include soft skills, workplace expectations, job search and interview practice. Guest presenters and industry excursions round out this exciting program.

If you have a background in the trades, HR or another profession, we’d love to hear from you.

What’s involved?

MM Programs run from April – July (Term 2) OR July – September (Term 3). Weekly mentoring sessions of 1-2 hours are held on a set day and time in each senior secondary setting.

Our seven fabulous partner schools are located in Brunswick, Coburg, Glenroy, Reservoir and Richmond.

The total time commitment from interview to post program evaluation, including training, is 20-30 hours over 4 months depending on the choice of program.

Mentors are well supported by the VME team and partner school. In addition to a pre-program induction session at the school, comprehensive free training and resources are also provided.

What will the mentoring sessions cover?

The MM Program is embedded in the school’s VCE Vocational Major curriculum and provides students with a unique opportunity to explore their aspirations, go on an industry excursion, strengthen their work readiness skills, and build their confidence and communication skills.

Volunteer mentors draw from their own career/life experience and networks to guide in-class career discussions and simple activities, overseen by and in collaboration with the teacher.

While a Program Framework and associated Tool Box Activities have been developed for the Program, it is flexible in nature to allow each teacher to tailor it to best meet the needs of their students and their Work Related Skills curriculum.

Who are the VME partner schools?

Our partner schools are richly diverse and passionate about going the extra mile to support their young people and the communities they live in.
